HOW TO PREPARE

Guide to Preparing Your Family for a Stress-Free Photography Session

I’m absolutely thrilled about our upcoming session!

By now, you should have received our session guide, which includes styling tips, client wardrobe options, and a questionnaire. Now, let’s dive into how to prepare for our time together.

WHAT TO EXPECT

I want our session to be a true reflection of your family—a time for you all to unplug and savor moments together that you'll cherish forever. This session is all about you, so I encourage you to set aside any expectations and simply be yourselves. Trust me to capture the in-between moments, the details, the love and the joy of your time together.

Throughout the session, I will gently guide you to ensure you feel comfortable and authentic, allowing us to create memories that are uniquely yours. Please let me know in advance if there are any specific requests or important details about each family member that I should keep in mind.

PREPARING THE FAMILY

Relax! I know there’s a lot of preparation involved—styling, naps, cleaning, and managing excitement. Embrace the day as “a fun outing with Cassy and her camera” rather than stressing over achieving the “perfect shot.” Each session captures genuine moments unique to your family.

I understand the challenge of photoshoots with toddlers but I want all my beautiful mums to know this is 100% normal, I’ve been there and I know it all to well but I have experience working with young children and really want to stress the importance of prepping them for a relaxed and enjoyable session.

Preparing for our session is all about creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Here are essential tips to help everyone feel at ease:

  • Setting the Mood

  1. Positive Mindset: Approach the day with excitement! This is about creating lasting memories, not achieving perfection. Every moment captured reflects your family's unique story.

  2. Family Involvement: Encourage siblings and family members to help choose outfits or props. This participation fosters excitement and investment in the session.

  3. Clear Communication: Use fun language to explain what to expect. Frame the session as a time for play and connection rather than a formal photoshoot to reduce anxiety.

  • Trusting the Process

  1. Stay Relaxed: Your demeanor sets the tone. If you’re enjoying the moment, they’re likely to follow your lead.

  2. Candid Moments: Emphasize that this is a time to enjoy each other. Sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen spontaneously.

  3. Use Rewards Sparingly: If you plan on using rewards like toys or snacks, save them for last-minute situations. Experience shows that if a child knows about a reward beforehand, they may fixate on it, potentially leading to distractions.

  • Embracing Flexibility

  1. Stay Adaptable: Be ready for the unexpected. Babies can be unpredictable, and toddlers may need breaks. Flexibility allows everyone to relax and enjoy the process.

  2. Capture Authentic Moments: Remind everyone that it’s okay to be themselves—perfect smiles aren’t the goal. We aim for genuine interactions that reflect your family’s character.

  3. Comfort is Key: Ensure everyone feels comfortable in their outfits and the environment. Check the weather for outdoor shoots and bring layers for babies.

  • Keeping Kids Engaged

  1. Snack and Breaks: Little ones have shorter attention spans, so bring favorite snacks and allow breaks to keep spirits high.

  2. Mindset for Parents: Take a moment for yourself before the session. Your calmness will set the tone for the day.

  3. Fostering Playfulness: Encourage natural interactions—like tickle fights or silly faces—to help everyone relax.

  4. Manage Expectations: Explain that the goal is to capture personalities and real moments, not just perfect smiles. Emphasize it’s okay to be themselves.

  • FamiliariSing the Kids

  1. Familiarity: If possible, visit the location beforehand or show photos of the spot. Familiarity can ease anxiety.

  2. Bring Comfort Items: Allow children to bring a favorite toy or blanket for added comfort.

  3. Positive Reinforcement: Compliment them throughout the session, focusing on how well they’re doing and the fun you’re having together.

  4. Short Attention Spans: Plan for shorter sessions if your kids tend to lose focus. A few fantastic moments are better than a stretched-out session that could lead to frustration.

By incorporating these tips, your family can feel relaxed, engaged, and ready to create lasting memories together. I’m here to support you throughout the process, ensuring we capture these precious moments beautifully. I can’t wait to document your family’s love and joy during this special time!

WHAT TO BRING

Pack diapers, wipes, extra clothes, food, comfort items for your toddler, towel if at the beach because from experience kids never leave the beach dry.
